A Loose Bridge Requires Immediate Care

Posted .

Dental brides are precise pieces of tooth-supporting construction. They’re designed to help replace a lost tooth, and bridges are just as functional and durable as your real teeth. However, as with any dental procedure, sometimes things don’t go as planned. Certain instances can cause your bridge to become loose, and if that happens to you, you need to see your dentist immediately.

An accidental hard fall or blow to the face can sometimes compromise the cement that secures one or both abutments bridge. Chronic issues with gum disease can also pose a serious threat. The bacteria in your mouth are pervasive.

Over time gum disease can cause your gums to recede from the base of your teeth. This could give the bacteria in your mouth access to the seam where your bridge meets the abutments, which is what your dental bridge is anchored to. As time passes they can compromise and weaken the cement that anchors one of both ends of your bridge.

If you notice any part of your bridge feels loose, you should avoid wiggling, cleaning or playing with it. Even a small amount of motion could cause damage and complications to the abutment. If you have blood or debris in your mouth you can rinse it away with lukewarm salt water. Otherwise you should wait for Dr. Lupy Gonzalez to perform any professional cleaning procedures required.

If it is simply a matter of bacteria weakening the cement on one or both abutments, Dr. Lupy Gonzalez might be able to simply clean the area and secure the bridge back in place with fresh cement. However, there are instances when you may need a root canal in order to restore your bridgework. If both abutments are affected, then you’ll need them removed and have to face the choice of either another bridge, or perhaps getting implants this time around.

If your bridge feels loose, you should not delay in calling Dr. Lupy Gonzalez at 281-487-2400 to schedule an appointment.
